SOWETO AND GOLD REEF CITY MINE TOUR (Full day: 8 hours)

Hours allocated include travelling time

You can combine Soweto and Gold Reef City tour to learn the full history, Culture and the story of
Gold in Johannesburg. Soweto is the melting pot of South African Urban Culture. It is the must-see of tourists who are looking to see more than the big 5. Post the 1994 Democratic Election, Soweto has become a place of vibrancy, friendship and contrast.

We visit Vilakazi street, the street with Historical Significant. The only street in the world where the two Nobel Prize winners lived. The houses of the two Nobel Prize Winners: Late President Mandela and Arch-Bishop Emeritus Tutu are situated in this famous street. You will have the opportunity to see the various parts of Soweto, how some communities are still in need of development and Poverty alleviation and how some areas have turned into "small affluent suburbs.

At Gold Reef City you will be taken on tour, through the Museum, travel down the Mine Shaft, view the Gold Reef that gave birth to Johannesburg. Gold Reef City is actually a Life Museum of a Victorian Architecture depicting the story of Gold.  The museum is dedicated to gold mining where it is possible to see a gold-containing ore vein and see how real gold is poured into barrels.

With its Victorian houses and geological displays, Gold reef City offers many fascinating insights into life in Johannesburg long before the technological age. In the centre of Gold Reef City stands Shaft No 14, opened in 1887 and closed after 84 years of operation in 1971.

Gold reef City is one of Johannesburg’s most popular attractions for Tourists and locals alike. The site where  Gold Reef City is situated is an old Gold mine and it has been modelled to resemble the gold rush and the gold rich history of Johannesburg. The area was flooded by Prospectors after the discovery of Gold in 1886. Over its 90-year lifespan the mine produced some 1.4 million kilograms of gold, blasted out of the ground by 30 000 miners.
