Hector Pieterson Memorial Museum

Hector Peterson Memorial museum is named after Hector (Pitso) Pieterson a 12 year old boy who was the first child to be killed on the 16th June 1976 during Students’ uprisings. The memorial interprets the Memory, Legacy and History of the 1976 National uprisings. Since its establishment in 2002 it has developed a diverse collection of Oral testimonies, Historical documents and the Material culture of the uprisings. Flea markets selling curios, beaded work, African clothing and many more are available in Vilakazi Street and at Hector Peterson Museum.

Vilakazi Street

We visit Vilakazi Street, a popular attraction with the Historical. Significance.Vilakazi Street is the only street in the world where two Nobel Prize winners once lived. The houses of the two Nobel Prize Winners: Late President Mandela and Arch-Bishop Emeritus Tutu are situated in this famous street.

Mandela Museum House

Mandela House in Vilakazi Street Soweto was built in 1945 by Johannesburg City Council .Mandela lived in this house before his life imprisonment. Nelson Mandela’s former house provides an effective, efficient and meaningful experience to all visitors, informing them of the former President Nelson Mandela's story in the context of his life as a whole, in a manner that promotes Human rights, Democracy, Reconciliation, Mutual respect and Tolerance amongst the people of South Africa.

Gold Reef City Tour Details

Gold Reef City is actually a Life Museum of a Victorian Architecture depicting the story of Gold. The museum is dedicated to gold mining. With its Victorian houses and geological displays, Gold reef City offers many fascinating insights into life in Johannesburg long before the technological age. In the centre of Gold Reef City stands Shaft No 14, opened in 1887 and closed after 84 years of operation in 1971 Gold reef City is one of Johannesburg’s most popular attractions for Tourists and locals alike The site where Gold Reef City is situated is an old Gold mine and it has been modelled to resemble the gold rush and the gold rich history of Johannesburg The area was flooded by Prospectors after the discovery of Gold in 1886. Over its 90-year lifespan the mine produced some 1.4 million kilograms of gold, blasted out of the ground by 30 000 miners.


Mine Regulations

The following rules apply to the underground tour to ensure the safety of our guests:

  • Pregnant woman and children under 6 years are not allowed to go underground.
  • People with the following health conditions are not allowed to go underground:
    • Claustrophobia, people with any walking defects such as an artificial foot or leg, people who recently had major surgery or anybody who ever
      had a bypass and any person without shoes.
    • People who suffer from Asthma cannot go down the mine and
    • People who are visually impaired cannot go down the mine.

Gold Reef City has a variety of restaurants to choose from. In addition to restaurants, there are Coffee shops and food court with fast food Outlets.
